Appeal to the High Court, Baim Wong Optimistic the Divorce Decision Won't Change Much

Although officially divorced from Paula Verhoeven on April 16, 2025, Baim Wong has decided to appeal the decision of the South Jakarta Religious Court. Not only Baim, but Paula's side has also taken similar steps. Now, the legal process continues at the level of the Religious High Court.

Fahmi Bachmid, Baim Wong's attorney, revealed that the appeal was made because there are several points in the decision that they want to review. Nevertheless, he remains confident that the substance of the first-instance judge's decision will not change much. "Yes, we are appealing, and we are ready to face the process at the appellate court level. But I think the decision of the first-instance judge is already accurate and correct," said Fahmi when met in the Tendean area, South Jakarta, Monday (April 29, 2025).

According to him, the panel of judges has decided the case based on strong facts presented during the trial. He stated that the judge's assessment was quite objective and fair, making it unlikely for major changes to occur in the decision. "The judge's considerations are based on valid evidence, and everything has been tested in court," he added.

Fahmi also assesses that the appeal process is a normal aspect in a divorce case. He emphasizes that this step is the right of any party that is not satisfied with the decision.

"The legal effort of appeal is the right of every citizen. So we respect it, there is no problem," he said.

In the appeal process, Fahmi said, his side has prepared an appeal memorandum containing legal arguments and responses to the objections from Paula's side.

"We have compiled the appeal memorandum according to the procedural law. And we will also respond to the counter memorandum from their side," Fahmi revealed.

He explained that an appeal is not just about seeking victory, but also ensuring that the legal process runs fairly and comprehensively.

"The most important thing is the substantive justice, not just winning or losing," he added.

Fahmi hopes that the High Court can see the case as a whole and assess it based on the legal facts that have been examined previously.

"If the first decision is in accordance with the law and facts, it usually doesn't change much," he said.

With an optimistic attitude, Fahmi stated that his side is ready to accept whatever the outcome of the appeal process, as long as it is conducted transparently and professionally.
