Aris Kurniawan Was Once Underrated by His Family for Selling Tofu, Gave a Smart Answer About His Business Philosophy

Shifting from the entertainment world to the culinary business is often looked down upon, and that is what actor Aris Kurniawan experienced. Widely known for his roles in colossal soap operas, his decision to open a tofu meatball business initially received negative responses, even from his own family.

Aris Kurniawan does not deny that he was once in that position. He recounts how those close to him underestimated his business choice, which they thought was not on par with his profession as an artist.

"My family did ask me at one point. 'Wait, you're selling tofu?','" said Aris Kurniawan during a conversation with Kapanlagi.com on Monday (4/8/2025).

Facing such views, this senior actor has a clever and philosophical answer. According to him, he deliberately does not create products that are exactly the same as those already on the market to avoid creating direct competition, but rather to provide new options for consumers.

"Well, if you know, it depends on how we do it. There are regular ones, there are premium ones, and so on. If people sell the same thing, we might be competitors. If we offer different options, variations, it doesn't make people feel competed with and so on," he said.

The actor Aji Basa Pamungkas even analogizes his business strategy to the roles in the acting world. According to him, every product has its own segment and portion, just like the main roles and supporting roles in a movie.

"It's the same as artistry, right? There are supporting roles, there are main assistant roles, there are main roles, right? What do we become? There are actually no competitors. It's just the portion that we can take, the portion that Allah gives us the opportunity for, which one is meant for us," he explained.

He also responded to the mindset that considers selling tofu meatballs with a cart as a small business that is not promising. With the vision of an entrepreneur, Aris countered that assumption with a simple yet impactful business scale logic.

"So the thinking is that selling tofu with a cart has a small mindset. But if you multiply it by a thousand carts, maybe you could retire from filming," he said.

Aris emphasized that his business is not just 'ordinary tofu sales'. Innovation is the key for him to continue to grow and offer something different from others, starting from product variants to premium quality.

"We create tofu variants through innovation. From the basic ones, yes, regular, premium, super premium, super duper premium," said Aris.

In the end, Aris managed to prove that his business choice was the right step. Now, his 'Tahu Bakso Sang Pendekar' is not only loved by many, but also opens partnership opportunities for anyone who wants to venture into the culinary world.

"So for my friends, don’t think that this one pack of tofu meatballs is just a small profit. But what if the quota becomes ten thousand?" he concluded.
