Donny Damara Experiences Voice Injury While Dubbing for the Film 'PANJI TENGKORAK'

"Yes, I also didn't realize that the term from Deryl was, 'Oh, you're stressing your vocal cords.' Gone, really gone," said Donny Damara at XXI Kemang Village, South Jakarta, Monday (2/6/2025).

1. Voice Acting in Animated Films Is Not Easy

The experience of being a voice actor in this animated film turned out to be not as easy as imagined. Donny even experienced a loss of voice during the voice recording process.

"So Deryl was very wise, I was given a three-day break and I felt, wow, I am disturbing the production," he said.

2. Donny Had to Take Total Rest

After being given time to rest, Donny chose to completely recover his body. He consulted a doctor to be able to perform well during the next recording.

"So in the end, I took a full rest, total rest to the doctor, and returned on the fourth day after resting, my voice had just recovered," he stated.

3. The Healing Was Quite Difficult

The healing process he underwent was quite fast, as he received proper treatment from medical personnel. This allowed him to continue the project without significant obstacles.

"I just went to the doctor and was given anti-inflammatory medication," he explained.

4. Lost My Voice But Not Discouraged

Although he temporarily lost his voice, Donny does not feel discouraged to get involved as a voice actor in the future. In fact, he feels challenged by this new experience.

"Oh no (discouraged), in fact as a voice actor I think all my friends also feel that this is a new and challenging experience for me," he said.

5. Challenges and Interesting Aspects of Voice Acting

Donny revealed that the process of voice acting requires a different approach from regular acting. He has to rely on imagination and bring characters to life solely through voice.

"There are its own difficulties, and there are interesting aspects of how we voice act, we use our imagination, before we do the reading," he said.

6. Animation Film Dubbing Challenge

According to Donny, the challenge in animation dubbing is when actors have to express scenes without visual aids. This is very different from his experiences in live-action films.

"It's different from what you heard from friends earlier about dubbing; here we have to use our imagination, even like what Mas Deryl said about looking (there's the sound)," he said.

7. Scheduled for August 28, 2025

The film PANJI TENGKORAK is scheduled to be released in theaters starting August 28, 2025. Directed by Daryl Wilson, this film features a lineup of famous actors such as Denny Sumargo, Aghniny Haque, Donny Alamsyah, Revaldo, and many others.

Donny Damara emphasizes that the ability to express emotions solely through voice is at the core of being a voice actor. This process has made him appreciate the profession more.

"We have to be able to express that without any images. So I don't think I'll get tired of it," he concluded.
