Nothing Special, One of the Reasons Joko Anwar Rejects Offer to Direct a Hollywood Film

Various praises are also directed towards Joko Anwar because he chooses to focus on making Indonesian films that will be released on April 10, 2024, namely SIKSA KUBUR.

When met at XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, on Wednesday afternoon (March 13), Joko Anwar asserted that his reason for rejecting the offer that came in 2023 was because he did not want to make Hollywood the reference point. He believes that Indonesian films should be able to compete on the world stage. He also added that if there are similar offers in the future, he will still consider them first.

"Regarding Hollywood, I have repeatedly said that we should stop referring to or idolizing Hollywood as something better or bigger than us. Maybe it's enough that we worship something from Hollywood. It depends on the project, if it's good I accept it, if not then I don't," said Joko Anwar.

1. Reasons to Prioritize GRAVE PUNISHMENT

When asked further, Joko Anwar also gave another reason for rejecting the offer of a film project from Hollywood. Sutras film SATAN'S SLAVE chose to work on his tenth film, GRAVE PUNISHMENT, which contains an important message to be conveyed to the public.

"Why do I prioritize GRAVE PUNISHMENT because it is something that I agree is not only interesting, but also has an important message to be conveyed," he said.

2. Nothing Special

In addition, Joko Anwar considers that there is nothing special about the opportunity to work on a Hollywood film for now. He feels that Hollywood films are no longer an achievement for directors considering that Indonesia itself already has various quality films.

"What does shooting a film in Hollywood mean now, it doesn't mean anything. We can make films anywhere, they can be watched anywhere. Hollywood and Indonesia are no longer distant now," he concluded.
