Episode 9 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, titled "Small Fry and Reverse Retribution," opens the story by introducing Junpei Yoshino, a high school student who often becomes a victim of bullying by his peers. One day, Junpei skips school to watch a movie at the cinema, but he unexpectedly encounters his bullies there. Shortly after, Mahito, a mysterious cursed spirit, appears and gruesomely kills the bullies, altering their bodies. Junpei, who witnesses the incident, then pursues Mahito, captivated by the power he has just witnessed.

Meanwhile, Yuji Itadori and first-class Jujutsu sorcerer Kento Nanami are assigned to investigate the strange deaths at the cinema. Nanami, a pragmatic former office worker, shows Yuji the remnants of cursed energy left at the scene. Yuji quickly learns to see these remnants, which lead them to the rooftop of the building. Nanami explains that he does not have much respect for Gojo due to his frequent rule-breaking, but he acknowledges Gojo's reliability.

On the rooftop, Yuji and Nanami confront two cursed spirits. Yuji successfully defeats the curse he faces, impressing Nanami and making him realize the great potential that Gojo saw in Yuji. Nanami acknowledges that Yuji is stronger than an ordinary human and that his potential is still not fully tapped.

However, their fight takes a shocking turn when Nanami realizes that their enemy is not an ordinary cursed spirit. They are humans who have been transformed by cursed techniques. Shoko Ieiri, the Jujutsu High doctor, confirmed this after the autopsy, explaining that the victims died from shock due to mutations, not from Yuji's attack. Nevertheless, Yuji felt very angry and sad about the fate of the victims, a sincere reaction that surprised Nanami.

On the other hand, Mahito took Junpei to his hideout and began teaching him about the origins of cursed spirits. Mahito explained that curses are born from the collective fears of humanity, even fears of natural disasters can manifest strong curses. Nanami concluded that the remnants of cursed energy they found were traps deliberately left by the enemy, indicating that they were facing a very skilled and dangerous opponent.
