Aqiqah is one of the traditions in Islam to welcome a newborn baby. In aqiqah, there are several processes that have symbolic meanings.
In Islam, akikah has the status of sunnah muakkad, which means it is highly recommended to be performed, but it is not obligatory. If the parents are unable to carry out the akikah for their child, there is no sin for them.
Parents who hold an akikah usually slaughter two goats for a baby boy and one goat for a baby girl. The goat meat is then cooked and distributed to the guests.
The invited guests also pray for the newborn to become a devoted child, healthy, and successful in the future. In an akikah, religious leaders are generally invited to give a sermon and lead the prayer.
