Lafran's struggle in establishing the HMI organization was marked by the strengthening debate on religiosity and nationalism after Indonesia's independence. For Lafran, students are a non-partisan and independent group that can become a movement in advocating the spirit of Indonesian nationalism. The student organization (Islamic) can become a platform for the struggle for the nation and the people.

Lafran Pane is the younger brother of literary fighters, Sanusi and Armijn Pane. Sanusi and Armijn Pane became the inspiration for Lafran's small struggle before he moved to Jakarta, and later to Yogyakarta.
Thoughts about independent student organizations, not affiliated with political parties, to the awareness of the importance of religion as well as Indonesian identity, shaped his struggle along with his friends. Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam (HMI), established on February 5, 1947, eventually became the largest campus organization to this day. It is also instrumental in producing current Indonesian leaders.
"This Lafran film seems to be a 'different' film when released in the present time. The success of horror films and making them mainstream, seems to overshadow biographical films like Lafran. That's why we call this film Lafran a 'truly different' film," said Deden Ridwan, one of the film's producers.
"We want biographical films like Lafran to inspire today's millennial children. Lafran's statement that 'I am dedicated to Indonesia' is like a spirit in fighting for something in a non-instant way. This spirit is what we want to share with the audience of the Lafran film," explained Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tanjung, Chairman of the Presidium of MN Kahmi.

Like its original figure, the film Lafran also requires effort to invite audiences to come to the cinema. However, optimism arises when members of the Indonesian Student Association (HMI) move and organize Special Performances in 35 cities as a marathon event. Starting from early May until the end of June 2024.
Currently, there are already 5 cities (Jakarta, Lampung, Padang, Medan, Semarang) that have held special screenings of the film Lafran and have attracted approximately 10 thousand viewers. The Lafran performances in these five cities were attended by HMI cadres, figures, and sympathizers.
"Hopefully, the target of 1 million viewers from HMI cadres in 35 cities at the Marathon Special Performances event can be achieved before and after the film is officially released in theaters starting from June 20, 2024," said Arief Rosyid, Executive Producer of Lafran.
Arief also added that biographical films like Lafran must be made and must exist to open spaces of awareness, inspire, and motivate young people today.

The film Lafran is directed by Faozan Rizal and features actors such as Dimas Anggara, Lala Karmela, Mathias Muchus, Tanta Ginting, Ariyo Wahab, and Farandika. It has been in production for six years. Due to the COVID pandemic, Lafran can only be released in 2024.
