Review 'GJLS: IBUKU IBU-IBU', A Complete Comedy Close to the Daily Life of Indonesian Society

This film marks a new step for GJLS from the podcast world to the film industry, starring a lineup of well-known names. Starting from the GJLS comedy trio: Rigen Rakelna, Hifdzi Khoir, and Ananta Rispo; celebrated actress Nadya Arina, and senior actors like Luna Maya & Bucek Depp.

Rigen, Hifdzi, and Rispo each face complex life issues. Now adults, they are still far from stability and rely on their father, Tyo (Bucek Depp), who works as a boarding house owner.

Tyo feels lonely and sad after his wife, who is also the mother of his three sons, passes away. In short, Tyo meets Feni (Nadya Arina), a beautiful girl living in his boarding house. Tyo, who falls in love with Feni, plans to marry her soon and pass on his boarding house business to the cigarette saleswoman.

Rigen, Hifdzi, and Rispo are shocked by their father's decision. Unwilling to let the inheritance fall into someone else's hands, the three of them try to thwart the marriage plans. However, the situation becomes even more complicated with the appearance of Sumi (Luna Maya), an old friend of Tyo. Although initially not raising suspicion, Sumi actually has bad intentions and secretly steals the boarding house certificate belonging to Tyo.

The GJLS trio Rigen, Hifdzi, and Rispo are the central figures in this film. Their acting and chemistry can be described as impressive, as they both have backgrounds as stand-up comedians. However, the two main female characters in GJLS: IBUKU IBU-IBU are also not just complements to the GJLS trio.

Nadya Arina, known as a star in drama films, is also skilled in comedy films. Her sad acting as Feni when facing rejection from Tyo's children showcases her caliber as a prominent figure in drama films. Nadya successfully builds an image as a beautiful, flirty girl who also has explosive emotions during conflicts.

Luna Maya, known as the queen of horror films, also delivers a great performance in this film. Portraying the antagonistic character Sumi, Luna Maya demonstrates her status as one of the seniors in the acting scene in the country. In GJLS: IBUKU IBU-IBU, Luna Maya or Sumi appears as a flirty figure while teasing Tyo, a manipulative character when deceiving Tyo, and also a 'victim' in the horror film during the scene where Rigen pretends to be a ghost in Sumi's room.

Bucek successfully portrays Tyo, a wise, funny, and devoted father to his partner. Just like Nadya Arina & Luna Maya, Bucek's presence is not only as a complement to the GJLS trio but also to bring the main premise of this film to life.

Tyo is a warm yet firm father to his three children. Tyo can also be a devoted husband to his first wife who has passed away, to Feni, and a man who cannot resist the charms of women. Tyo reflects the life of a father who manages a boarding house, is not very tech-savvy, and has the potential to become a victim of scams due to his naivety.

3. Bloopers Displayed Clearly

In GJLS: MY MOTHER'S MOTHERS, several bloopers are prominently displayed in the main scene of this film. One of the bloopers occurs when the doctor explains the illness suffered by Tyo to the trio Rigen, Hifdzi, and Rispo. This makes the punchline of the humor presented even more impactful.

Bloopers also appear in the scene where the GJLS trio sneaks into Sumi's house. This is unusual for comedy films in Indonesia, which typically do not include bloopers in the final film.

Rispo, who becomes addicted to online gambling and gets caught up in online loans, being pursued by debt collectors, provides education for the Indonesian community to avoid the main source of financial problems: online gambling.

Tyo, who carelessly signs a contract that has been altered for Sumi's benefit, ultimately has to relinquish the certificate of his boarding house to someone who does not deserve it. This teaches the community to be careful when making agreements with anyone to avoid becoming victims of fraud.

5. Adult Comedy Film

This film has a D17 rating which includes many adult scenes and words. Some curses, vulgar language, sensual scenes, and even masturbation scenes are 'presented' in GJLS: IBUKU IBU-IBU. Although there are no kissing or sexual scenes, the D17 rating given seems appropriate for GJLS: IBUKU IBU-IBU.

The comedy in GJLS: IBUKU IBU-IBU also contains several dark jokes such as making fun of a character with a cleft lip, joking about a character without a neck, and humiliating people of below-average height or dwarfs. Clearly, it requires the 'maturity' of the audience to digest and understand this type of joke.
