For the First Time, Films that Only Stream on Streaming Platforms Can Enter the Oscars Next Year

"The Academy believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of film than to watch it in cinemas. Our commitment to that has not changed and remains unshakable. However, the tragic COVID-19 pandemic requires this temporary exception," said President David Rubin and Chief Executive Dawn Hudson.

1. Must be Played Safely

Previously, the requirement for a film to be eligible for the Academy Awards was that it had to be screened in Los Angeles theaters for approximately seven days.

This was done as one of the criteria and considerations to determine whether the films were worthy of qualifying. After that, the selected films would then enter several categories and be nominated for awards.

2. Netflix and Other Streaming Film Platforms

The emergence of Netflix and several streaming platforms has made Hollywood work harder. Despite being only available for streaming, these digital platforms are able to attract big stars to join their projects.

In 2019, Netflix managed to surpass conventional film studios by winning awards for the film ROMA as the best foreign language film of 2019.
