Marvel Studio Reportedly Considering Releasing Films via Streaming

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of human life, including the Hollywood film industry and Marvel Studio. BLACK WIDOW which was originally scheduled to premiere in mid-2020 has been postponed multiple times until May 2021. Not only that, all Marvel Phase Four films have also experienced schedule changes.

The decision to premiere through the streaming platform has been made by their competitor, Warner Bros. They aim to premiere all their films in 2021 through 2 platforms, namely cinemas and the HBO Max streaming platform. This decision, which has been opposed by many Hollywood film industry players, is due to the ongoing pandemic. Now Marvel seems to be considering the same plan, but with a different approach.

1. New Contracts

Warner Bros' decision to release their films in 2021 has received much criticism. Because they made that decision unilaterally, the film crew involved from director to actor were not informed about that decision. Some actors like Margot Robbie and Will Smith also questioned whether they received compensation for that decision.

A Marvel employee who did not want to be named told The Warp that Marvel Studio is starting to consider new contracts for Marvel film actors that include permission to stream on the platform. Not only that, they will also receive different payments according to the future agreement.

2. Technological Advancement

Marvel Studio also realizes how advanced technology is for their industry. They are aware that streaming platforms are favored by many people, especially in times of pandemic. In yesterday's Disney's Investor Day, Marvel Studio also announced that 12 of their projects will be released through the Disney Plus streaming platform.

However, a Marvel employee who did not want to be named told The Warp that they still prioritize theatrical releases for their big films. Disney Plus streaming platform is another path they will take if the pandemic forces them to do so. When that time comes, Marvel is ready with their new contract.
