Film Rating, an Important System for Film Lovers

Or have you ever been prohibited by cinema employees from watching a film that you have been waiting for because it does not meet the rating requirements of the film? What is the film rating anyway?

The film rating is a sign used to determine who can enjoy a film. The function of this rating system is to protect our mental health from the films we watch. Of course, films intended for adults can cause trauma if watched by children. That's why film ratings emerge as saviors. The Motion Picture Association of America divides film ratings into 5 categories:

1. G Rating

G rating refers to the word General, which means general. Films with G rating can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In this rating, the films are free from nudity, sex, or foul language. However, there may be some inappropriate language that is commonly used in daily life.

CARS, FINDING NEMO, and WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY are examples of films with G rating.

2.PG Rating

PG rating refers to the term Parental Guidance, which means with parental guidance. This rating requires parents to evaluate whether the film can be watched by their children or not. Some films with PG rating also require parents to accompany their children when watching films with this rating. This film may contain the use of profanity and some bullying scenes. However, it does not include adult scenes or the like.

Christmas special film HOME ALONE and animated film SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE have a PG rating.

3. PG-13 Rating

Almost the same as PG rating, the difference is that PG-13 rating is not recommended for viewers under 13 years old. Because in this rating, the films are above PG rating but below R rating. Which means, films with PG-13 rating can have rough dialogue, adult dialogue, violent scenes, and nudity scenes but no sexual scenes. Usually, films with this rating are owned by films with teenage romance and action themes.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME, BLACK PANTHER, and TITANIC are some examples of films with PG-13 rating.

4.R Rating

This rating already has adult scenes in it. Films with this rating usually have rough dialogues, many violent scenes, tense environments, and some sexual scenes. Viewers under 17 years old are prohibited from watching films with this rating without parental guidance. However, it is advisable for parents to investigate the film first. But it is wiser to wait until the age of 17 and above.

JOKER, DEADPOOL, and BATMAN V SUPERMAN are phenomenal films with R rating.

5.NC-17 Rating

Rating highest according to the Motion Picture Association Of America includes films with adult scenes. Not suitable for viewers aged 17 and under, usually films with this rating discuss themes of violence, sex, drug abuse, and other themes that many parents find too harsh for children to digest.

Films with this rating are considered limited because of the limited audience who can watch the film. AMERICAN PSYCHO starring Christian Bale and NATURAL BORN KILLERS starring Robert Downey Jr. are some films with NC-17 rating.
