The Fate of the Film 'WONDER WOMAN 1984', Streaming or Postponement

The fate of WONDER WOMAN 1984 can be said to be uncertain. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit in early March 2020, this film has changed its release schedule three times. It was supposed to be released on June 5, then postponed to August 14, then October 2, and finally December 25. Now, with the increasing number of positive Covid-19 cases worldwide, Warner Bros is considering other ways, one of which is to stream WONDER WOMAN 1984 online.

1. Fierce Competition

The presence of Covid-19 has caused many cinemas worldwide to choose to close. Cinemas that choose to remain open are only allowed to have 25%-50% of the audience capacity, in accordance with health protocols. This is a consideration for Warner Bros to broadcast WONDER WOMAN 1984 through the HBO MAX streaming platform.

However, if Warner Bros will broadcast the film starring Gal Gadot through HBO MAX, they have to compete with Netflix, Disney Plus, and Amazon. Netflix now dominates the world of film streaming platforms. In June 2020 alone, Netflix announced that they have 192 million users worldwide. On the other hand, HBO and HBO MAX only have 38 million users worldwide in September 2020.

However, Warner Bros believes that WONDER WOMAN 1984 will boost the popularity of HBO MAX because this film is highly anticipated by its fans.

2. Created for Theaters

WONDER WOMAN 1984 should have been a successful superhero film this year if it weren't for Covid-19. However, it seems that won't happen this year. Director Patty Jenkins, who worked on this film, revealed, "I think everyone is not confident about anything right now." We don't know what Covid-19 will become in the future.

Especially after seeing the less than optimal revenue of the movie TENET that was released in theaters during this pandemic, all film studios are reconsidering. Patty Jenkins said WONDER WOMAN 1984 was created to be released in theaters. If that's the case, then Gal Gadot and others only have 2 choices, either to still release it on December 25 or postpone it to 2021.
