Roy Kiyoshi shared an interesting story about the Imlek tradition in his family. One of the things that caught attention was his admission that he still receives angpao even though he is already an adult.

"So during Imlek, I am the one who receives angpao, because I am not allowed to give it out. In Chinese tradition, it's considered bad luck to give angpao, it actually makes it less effective," Roy explained his reason when met at the Vihara in the Sunter area, North Jakarta, on Monday (27/1/2025).

According to Chinese tradition, those who are not married are indeed not required to give out angpao. Roy admitted that he enjoys this tradition, even though the amount of angpao he receives is not large.

"Oh come on, it's small, not comparable. Just ordinary, just to make it lively, how much could it be?" he said casually.

When asked if the amount reached millions, Roy chuckled and replied, "Yes, probably that much, not tens of millions, no. Besides, I'm the laziest person to visit anywhere. During Chinese New Year, I just stay home, eat together, that's it."

Roy prefers to celebrate Chinese New Year in a simple way. The angpao money he receives is often used for social activities.

"I distribute it again, but in Chinese tradition, I buy rice, ready-made food, just to be shared around," he explained.

When asked about marriage, Roy admitted that there is no pressure from his family. He feels grateful because his parents allow him to determine his own path in life.

“No, luckily my parents don’t arrange things, so I’m not too stressed. I mean, whether to get married or not is up to me,” he said.

Roy also denied any attempts to match him with someone else. According to him, his family does not interfere much in matters of romance.

“Not at all, I don’t even understand, no one is trying to match me, and I don’t know anyone either,” he added.

Even so, Roy still hopes this Lunar New Year brings better luck, especially in terms of health.

“Yeah, that's it, praying that this New Year brings a partner is better, but health is also more important, I hope everything is safe,” he concluded.
