The Story Behind 'Betting on Fire', the Determining Single for Dongker That Almost Disbanded

Every band has a crucial moment that determines their path forward. For Dongker, that moment came with the release of their iconic single, Betting on Fire. This song is not just an ordinary work, but a significant gamble that will determine whether Dongker continues or disbands.

Delpi Suhariyanto, the guitarist of Dongker, revealed that before Betting on Fire was released, the band members were at a crossroads. They had started to get busy with their respective jobs outside of music, and to move on to a full album, considerable financial resources were needed. This single became a sort of final ultimatum for the band's survival.

"Was it risky to bet on Fire at first? If the single release didn't succeed, we would break up, Sir. But it turns out there was a blessing. Eventually, it continued until the album. From there, right?" said Delpi at the Kapanlagi Youniverse office.

The difficult financial situation was one of the main factors for their doubts at that time. According to Delpi, if the single did not bring in enough blessings, it would be impossible for them to finance the production of an album. Fortunately, fate had other plans. Betting on Fire was very well received by the listeners.

"Because if making an album doesn't bring in blessings, it's not that there aren't blessings, at that moment I, Arno, and Nanang were all already working, right? And if we want to make an album, we have to spend money again. Money was really tight then, Sir. It turns out that when Betting on Fire brought in blessings, the money could be allocated to make the album," he explained.

Although it sounds very serious, Arno Zarror added that the "dissolve" ultimatum was actually more like a joke among the members. There was not too much pressure, considering that all the members already had their own busy lives, ranging from work to romantic affairs.

"That's it. It was just a joke, really, Mas. Like there was no ultimatum. Let's go, like that. No, really. Everyone is busy with their own things. Work, some are dating. That sort of thing. So it's just a matter of fortune," Arno added.

The success of Betting on Fire not only saved Dongker from the potential of disbanding but also created a positive domino effect. Arno explained that the popularity of the single also helped revive their old songs from the first and second EPs, which had previously only been known within a limited circle in the local Bandung scene.

"But the song from before, EP 1, EP 2 has indeed been sung but only among friends, just in the village, local Bandung. Local, yes. And when there was a single track Bet on Fire, that one also started to rise," he concluded.
