Vadel Badjideh's Sentence Increased to 12 Years, Lawyer Furious

Oya Abdul Malik stated that he has no objection if his client's sentence is increased, as long as the procedure is correct. However, he suspects that the Appellate Court judges did not review the appeal memorandum that they had meticulously prepared. He believes that the decision was based solely on public opinion.

"The appeal response, it's okay, it's perfectly fine to raise it. Not 12 (years), if it goes higher it's also fine. It's their right. But what needs to be known here is the fact: The Appellate Judges did not read or review the appeal memorandum that we submitted," he said when met at the South Jakarta District Court on Tuesday (25/11/2025).

Deep disappointment is felt by the legal team. Oya emphasized that the judge should examine the facts of the trial, not just look at the sentiments that are developing in society. He accused the court of ignoring the legal facts that have already been revealed in the first-level trial.

"If you look at the verdict, it has increased, he only sees what is in the public. He does not examine the facts of the trial that we have outlined. That's it," continued Oya with a disappointed tone.

This cassation step is taken because Vadel's side believes there are many irregularities in the appeal verdict. Oya Abdul Malik reaffirmed his commitment to continue defending Vadel Badjideh until the last drop of blood. He will not allow his client to be punished for accusations that he believes are not legally proven.

"Cassation. I say I will never stop until the seventh heaven," Oya stated emphatically.

Oya's conviction is based on previous court facts that, according to her, prove that the abortion allegations are unfounded. She feels that a 12-year sentence is very unreasonable when considering the forensic facts presented by the Public Prosecutor (JPU) itself.

"The legal rights of my client are clear. In the court facts, the abortion is clearly unproven," she concluded.
