Sarah Sechan Challenges Herself to Play a Batak Woman in 'WASIAT WARISAN'

The renowned actress and presenter Sarah Sechan is once again showcasing her acting skills on the big screen through her latest film titled WASIAT WARISAN. In this film produced by PIM Pictures, Sarah plays Tarida, the eldest daughter of three siblings in a Batak family.

This role is a significant challenge for her because she is not from the Batak tribe and must truly delve into the character and its distinctive accent.

"The challenge is being able to speak with the accent, and understanding the culture as well. So this is a learning experience, an incredible project," said Sarah Sechan when met in the Cinere area, South Jakarta, on Friday (7/11/2025).

So focused on maintaining the authenticity of the accent, Sarah even chose not to improvise during the shooting process. She was afraid that improvisation would change the Batak accent she had trained and make it sound inconsistent.

"So during the shooting, I didn't dare to improvise, because I was afraid that if I improvised, the accent would disappear, suddenly I would revert to Sundanese again, and then forget everything," she said while laughing.

According to Sarah, the character Tarida is depicted as a serious and responsible older sister, which is quite different from her cheerful personality in real life. "Serious, so I was very afraid to deviate from the script," she added.

The director of WASIAT WARISAN, Agustinus Sitorus, explained that this film indeed demands depth of character from each of its players. He wants to present a family story that feels close to the realities of society, especially in facing inheritance issues.

"A simple story premise is that this is the result of research from the PIM Pictures team as well, that in the Lake Toba area, it often happens, not really a conflict, but mostly disputes regarding inheritance," said Agustinus.

However, Agustinus does not want this film to focus solely on the struggle for wealth. He instead adds a unique touch by presenting the theme of inheritance that turns out to be in the form of debt.

"But the concept of the film itself is not really about fighting over inheritance, it’s more about how to solve problems when parents pass away and there is an inheritance involved. The inheritance can be in the form of goods, but here we add that it can also be in the form of debt," he explained.

The presence of Sarah Sechan, Tigor, Astrid Tiar, and Derby Romero brings WASIAT WARISAN to life with the unique dynamics of a Batak family. This film not only presents a conflict over inheritance but also delivers a strong message about unity and responsibility in facing the legacy of parents. WASIAT WARISAN is scheduled to be released simultaneously in cinemas across Indonesia starting December 4.
