
The nine-year prison sentence and a fine of IDR 1 billion imposed on Vadel Badjideh are deemed very heavy by his legal team. Oya Abdul Malik even compared his client's punishment to the sentences received by corruptors in Indonesia, which are sometimes much lighter even though the state losses reach trillions of rupiah.
According to him, the punishment received by Vadel is not proportional and he feels that his client has been wronged by this ruling. This feeling of objection is one of the main motivations behind the appeal to the High Court.
