WAMI, RAI & KCI Collaborate with LMKN to Discuss Digital Platform Music Royalties

Kapanlagi.com - On Wednesday (29/1) yesterday, a discussion event was held with the theme of Performing Right's Royalties in the Digital Music Industry. The event was organized by three Collective Management Organizations, namely RAI, WAMI, and KCI, and invited LMKN.

Inviting Band Guitarist Samsons, Irfan Aulia, who is also a member of the Commissioner for Information Technology and Music Database, one of the discussions was about the changing music industry. The Chairman of WAMI, Chico Hindarto, in his speech, invited everyone to adapt to the changes.

Meanwhile, Saipul Uyun as the Secretary General of RAI welcomed this event. "RAI welcomes this event, because it can be used as a forum for information, discussion, and decision-making. In addition, RAI is ready to collaborate in any form for the welfare of members or rights holders," said Saipul.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of KCI, Dharma Oratmangun, spoke about the importance of synergy between LMK and LMKN. So that the decisions made by LMKN receive approval from LMK as the power recipient from the song creators.

"KCI basically agrees on royalty collection through a single channel, which is LMKN, but we as LMK must be involved in the discussion before making any decisions, because these LMKs have the authority from the song creators," explained Dharma.

It is undeniable that there are still differences of opinion in managing royalties between LMK and LMKN, or among LMK themselves. However, both parties agree to have the same goal, which is to improve the welfare of the power givers.

"We often have different opinions, but we remain united in fighting for the rights of the power givers. So let LMK and LMKN handle the royalty matters, and let the creators continue to create as much and as good as possible," he continued.

The event also discussed musician royalties through YouTube. Meidi Farialdi from WAMI revealed that the process regarding it is not easy, especially in terms of calculations.

"So far, WAMI has collaborated with YouTube regarding Performing Right, the process is indeed not easy. We don't remember the exact number, but it's approximately 18 billion in 2018, and the target for this year is to reach 20 billion," explained Meidi.

In the question and answer session, it was discussed about the legal instruments that regulate royalties. Although there is already the new Copyright Law No. 28 of 2014, according to Irfan Aulia, it still does not protect all parties.

"If we are asked whether our law protects our works uploaded on digital platforms? I answer no. Our law has not accommodated all digital platforms, so there is still a need for many changes or additions in new articles, following the rapidly developing technology. Many people cover other people's songs and upload them to digital platforms without the permission of the creator or publisher, so many copyright violations occur" he added.
