1. History of the Prophet's Birthday

Certainly, the commemoration of the Prophet's Birthday has its own history. However, the history of the Prophet's Birthday has many versions. It is known that the initial celebration of the Prophet's Birthday was held in the 4th century of the Hijri calendar by the Fatimid Dynasty in Egypt. The Fatimid Dynasty was a Shia ruling dynasty that had control over various regions in Maghreb, Egypt, and Syria from 362-567 Hijri.

The Fatimid Dynasty also celebrated other occasions such as Ashura, the birthday of Ali, the birthday of Hasan, the birthday of Hussein, the birthday of Fatimah, and so on. Actually, the celebration of the Prophet's Birthday was initially banned at that time, and the one who banned it was Al-Afdhal bin Amir al-Juyusy. However, it was eventually allowed again during the reign of Amir li Ahkamillah in 524 Hijri.

Furthermore, the celebration of the birthday was resumed during the leadership of Salahuddin Al Ayyubi in 579 Hijri, all of this was proposed by his brother-in-law, Muzaffaruddin. This was done to boost the spirit of Islamic struggle during the Crusades to recapture the city of Jerusalem.

2. The History of Prophet's Birthday in Indonesia

Certainly different from its early history, the history of the Prophet's Birthday also has its own story in Indonesia. The celebration of the Prophet's Birthday itself cannot be separated from the teachings and influence of the Wali Songo when spreading Islam in the land of Java. The maulid celebration also adapts the Javanese culture that we know as Grebeg Mulud.

There is no difference in celebrating the Prophet's Birthday then and now. As reported by NU Online, the celebration of the Prophet's Birthday in Indonesia is usually held by reading the Manakib of Prophet Muhammad in the Kitab Maulid Barzanji, Maulid Simtud Dhurar, Diba', Saroful Anam, Burdah, and others.

Even in Indonesia itself, the Prophet's Birthday event is spiced with Indonesian flavors. Yes, such as togetherness in eating and gathering to strengthen the bond of brotherhood. Of course, this is also taken from the example and attitude of Prophet Muhammad SAW, who is loved by Muslims around the world.

3. Hadith About Commemorating the Prophet's Birthday

After learning about the history of the Prophet's Birthday, what about the hadith about the Prophet's Birthday itself? Actually, celebrating the Prophet's Birthday is a bid'ah hasanah, which is something that was not done by the Prophet or his companions, but that act has goodness and is not contrary to the Quran and Hadith.

Of course, this is based on a narration stating that the Prophet also commemorated his birth and the reception of revelation by fasting on that day. Prophet Muhammad fasted to express gratitude for his birth and the beginning of the reception of revelation on Mondays.

In addition, there is an explanation in a hadith narrated by Muslim that says: "From Abu Qotadah al-Anshori RA, the Messenger of Allah was once asked about fasting on Mondays. The Messenger of Allah replied: On that day, I was born and revelation was sent down to me."

4. Reading the Prophet's Salawat

After knowing the history and hadith for a celebration of the Prophet's Birthday, here are some practices you can do. For the first practice, you can read the Prophet's Salawat as one of the good practices and get rewards. According to the hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, among the main forms of reciting the Prophet's Salawat taught by Prophet Muhammad SAW are: Allahumma shalli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kamma shallaita 'ala Ibrahim wa 'ala aali Ibrahim, innaKa Hamidum Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad Kama barakta 'ala Ibrahim wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidum Majid.

Meaning: O Allah. Give (that is, add) salawat (praise) to Muhammad and to the family of Muhammad, as You have given salawat to Ibrahim and to the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah. Give blessings to Muhammad and to the family of Muhammad. As You have given blessings to Ibrahim and to the family of Ibrahim, indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

5. Performing Sunnah Fasting
